BREEDING IN THE BUSINESS PARK
|Camouflaged, sitting on eggs||Protecting the nest and eggs|
Cape thick-knee, or dikkop, begin breeding in August, with the last chicks fledging in May. A pair may have more than one successful breeding attempt, with some recorded to rear chicks successfully from four different nests. If nests or chicks are lost, further attempts to breed may occur. They lay two eggs in a scrape in the sand lined with vegetation. Nests are usually in the open under or near tall trees. The eggs take about a month to hatch and the chicks fledge between five and six weeks. When threatened by predators the chicks crouch and remain motionless while the adults often pretend to have a broken back, wing or leg to distract the predator.

CAMERA TRAPPING IN THE PARK
For the last two months, Andrea von Gunten – Site Manager of the Muizenberg East Conservation Cluster for the Biodiversity Management Branch of the Environmental Management Department – and her team have set a camera trap in the Business Park nature conservation area to monitor and identify the wildlife present. Camera trapping is a non-invasive way of monitoring wildlife and yields greater results than just walking it the field. Here are some pictures captured during the trap monitoring.
First and second from the left is the water mongoose and a small grey mongoose, respectively. This side-by side comparison shows the size difference between the two species. The camera also photographed a porcupine and a grysbok.
Left and centre are pictures of a striped field mouse and a southern masked weaver.
The picture on the right shows the camera trap.
